Chamomile

Scientific name: Matricaria recutita and Chamaemelum nobilus

Introduction:

Chamomile, a member of the daisy (Asteraceae) family, is a well-known traditional medicinal plant. German chamomile (Matricaria recutita, synonym Chamomilla recutita) and Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile, syn. Anthemis nobilus) are the two most widely used herbs in this family.

The flowers look very like daisy flowers and have a yellow central disc surrounded by white petals. German chamomile (M. recutita), is the species most used medicinally but another common chamomile species which looks very like it and has also been used medicinally for centuries, is Roman chamomile (C. nobile). The essential oil and chemical constituents of Roman chamomile and German chamomile are quite different and Roman chamomile is now more widely used in topical preparations.

Introduction:

Native to Tamil nadu, India. Vetiver in Tamil means Cut Root. Vetiver has been used to produce perfumes, creams and soaps. It is used for its antiseptic properties to treat acne and sores, its constituents are anti-bacterial and is used as a natural deodoriser.

Introduction:

The flower petals of Calendula officinalis have been used for their anti-inflammatory and skin healing benefits for centuries, which is why we use it in our award winning multi-tasking face and body oil here in Modern Botany.

Calendula is a well-known traditional medicinal herb that is native to central, eastern and southern Europe1. It is thought to have originated in the Mediterranean, Egypt and Iran but is now widely cultivated all over Europe and in North America. Calendula has been used since ancient times in Indian, Arabic, Egyptian, Roman and Greek cultures.

Witch Hazel

Scientific name: Hamamelis virginiana L.

Family: Hamamelidaceae

Common names: Witch Hazel

Introduction: Preparations of H. virginiana have been used traditionally by Native Americans as food and medicine, and for sacred and other purposes. It is a strong astringent. The Cherokee used an infusion of witch hazel plant parts for colds, fever, sore throat, tuberculosis, pain (including gynecological), as a beverage, and as a wash for skin sores and scratches. The Chippewa (also known as the Ojibwe) used an infusion of the inner bark internally as an emetic in cases of poisoning and externally for skin conditions and sore eyes.
