Sustainability Day

Sustainability Day

Following the first ever World Car Free Day on the 22nd of September, the day after World Clean Up day, we can see the current climate of change for the better is in full flow. There is still a lot to do, but with us all making better decisions, combined we can make a movement.

The beauty industry is one of the biggest culprits and we are not saying that brands need to be perfect, but we are saying that brands should be making better choices that in turn will allow the consumer to make better and more informed choices.

With the approach of Sustainability Day on the 23rd of October, we wanted to remind ourselves of the importance of starting to move away from virgin plastics, to use materials that can be infinitely recycled, such as glass and aluminium. That we can help make a difference and that it shouldn’t take one day to make you take notice, but it is a good opportunity to remind you of this.

Ingredient - Cedarwood

Ingredient - Cedarwood

Himalayan and Atlas Cedarwood are thought to have been the very first essential oils ever to have been distilled. Both the wood and the oil were used for extensive range of medicinal and cosmetic purposes. Having been present in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, Cedarwood has incredible healing properties, is great for those who have more oily skin types - inhibiting the clogging of pores and protecting the skin from bacteria.

It also works as a natural insect repellent, we think it smells divine, but mosquitos and fleas (luckily!) hate the aroma. The reason we love this super ingredient so much, is its natural deodorising properties, which is present in our Modern Botany 100% Natural Deodorant.

How to help the Amazon

How to help the Amazon

Last week we saw the awful reality of the Amazon wildfires FINALLY showcased on the World’s media. Due to the sheer size of the Amazon, this magnificent beast is our first line of defence against global warming and at the current rate of deforestation we are scarily near to the tipping point – that the Amazon will no longer function as a carbon sink.

With over 72,843 recorded fires this year alone, the state has now declared a state of emergency. This is a Global issue, one that is very close to our hearts. So,we wanted to share with you a few things that you can do to help.

Ingredient - Flax

Ingredient - Flax

Did you know there is one seed that can improve your health, fight off disease and give you healthy, glowing, beautiful skin? The beauty benefits of flaxseeds are the talk of the skin care industry. Keep reading to find out why.

Flax seeds are tiny nutrition powerhouses. These brown and golden seeds have been cultivated and eaten for thousands of years. In the 8th century, King Charlemagne was so convinced of their health-promoting properties that he ordered all his subjects to eat them. What is in them that makes them so good for us? Omega 3 fatty acids, antioxidants and fiber.

Your skin gets its nourishment from the inside and out. What you put in your body matters as much as what you put on your skin. Flax seeds for skin care are an important part of your beauty routine. Eat flax seeds for skin health and use them in your daily skin care to get the most benefits of flaxseeds. IF you do, here is what you can expect….

1. Get Your Glow On
Omega-3s in flax give your skin what it needs to look vibrant and youthful.

2. Reduce and Prevent Wrinkles
The omega-3s in flax seeds help your body produce collagen that keeps skin smooth and elastic.

3. Soothe Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin is often caused by a disruption of the natural oil barrier on the skin’s surface. The omega-3s in flax seeds help maintain this barrier.

4. Redness, Rosacea, Eczema, Psoriasis
These skin conditions are a result of inflammation in the skin. Flax seeds reduce inflammation and help speed up the healing process!

 5. Acne
Flax seeds help control the production of sebum, the natural oily barrier, in the skin.

Jacquemus

Jacquemus

This week saw Valensole’s heady lavender plateau in full bloom (for one month only), with clouds of white butterflies tending to the crop of purple flowers that stretch beyond the horizon. It was the perfect setting for Simon Porte Jacquemus, to host his spring/summer 2020 show on the brand’s 10th anniversary.

A catwalk that paid homage to artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and David Hockey’s Royal Academy installation, The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011

It’s the third time that the designer has shown in the South of France, but Valensole’s unique setting is the strongest statement of his evocative references, bold vision and talent for big-brand thinking. Jacquemus grew up an hour away in Mallemort, and is drawn to the “pop” appeal of the lavender fields.

Ingredient - Lavender

Ingredient - Lavender

Lavender oil, the BEAUTIFUL purple flower that is coming into season, ready for the harvest this month, is a secret super ingredient that we all have access to! An antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, which can help to heal minor burns and bug bites. It is also used for treating anxiety, insomnia, depression, and restlessness.

AND…You can even make it into a tea to help treat and soothe digestive upsets. This super botanical can also help relieve pain from headaches and toothaches – it really is a silent superhero!

Here is our simple lavender tea recipe for you to try:

Step 1: Heat Water

Fill a medium sized teapot with filtered, purified, or spring water and bring to a rolling boil. Never use tap water or distilled water when brewing teas. These types of water can cause flavour alterations and prevent tea leaves and flower buds from infusing flavour completely.

Step 2: Steep Lavender Flowers

Add the lavender flowers to a tea ball, tea infuser, or tea sachet and place inside the teapot. We recommend using an infuser basket as it allows the lavender flowers to open completely and results in the best tasting tea. Leave the flower buds in the teapot for 10 minutes to steep.

Step 3: Serve and Enjoy

Remove the lavender buds and the tea tools from the kettle. Carefully pour the hot water into teacups and enjoy the crisp, floral taste of simple lavender tea. Add a dash of honey to turn this simple tea into lavender honey tea
